Class 2 (Cat C) Licence
Most popular starting point for new HGV drivers. The Class 2 (Category C) licence allows you to drive rigid lorries over 7.5 tonnes, up to 32 tonnes in total. It’s the perfect entry-level licence for anyone beginning their HGV career and covers vehicles like delivery trucks, tippers, and refuse lorries. Typical annual earnings range up to £38,000.
Class 1 (Cat C+E) Licence
Take your HGV career to the next level. The Class 1 (Category C+E) licence lets you drive articulated lorries — the largest vehicles on UK roads. It’s ideal for drivers who already hold a Class 2 licence and want to increase earning potential or take on long-distance haulage jobs. Earning potential — up to £50,000 per year.
7.5 Tonne (Cat C1) Licence
Perfect for smaller commercial vehicles. A C1 licence covers medium-sized vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes, making it ideal for those driving ambulances, motorhomes, horseboxes, or light commercial trucks. You’ll also be permitted to tow a trailer weighing up to 750kg, giving flexibility for a range of personal and professional uses.
Driver CPC Licence
Essential for all professional drivers. If you’re driving HGVs commercially for hire or reward, the Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is a legal requirement. This qualification ensures professional driving standards and must be renewed every 5 years through 35 hours of periodic training.

I recently did my class 1 training with GSC driver training, the full course condensed into 4 days was tough but the training was great and all aspects delivered professionally and clearly.

GPD - GSC driver training have really helped me to gain my category C licence and their training instructor have taught me everything about the training into real practical skills which made me pass my first time, the training was effective in enhancing operators' skills and knowledge which I gained throughout my driver training journey. With some adjustments and additions, the training program can become even more comprehensive and beneficial for the future career. I would like to mentioned David who really taught me exactly how to deal and driver in the real world and gave the opportunity to be a successful trainee whilst on the training on my first time doing my practical test. His teaching ability, techniques and knowledge have given me the ability to be confidence and positive in my test, and was very essential and I really thank everyone who is part of the GPD - GSC group, specially massive thanks Laura who has made this journey a lot easier for myself and all the effort that the team has put into place for myself and others who were undertaking the same training.

Question 2: Do I need to have my provisional HGV licence before booking?
Not necessarily — we’ll guide you through the application process for your provisional licence and let you know exactly what forms and documents are required.

Most learners can get their medical, provisional licence, and theory test booked within a few weeks. From there, we’ll schedule your practical training at the earliest convenient date.
Question 4: What paperwork or documents do I need to provide?
You’ll need your current driving licence, proof of address, and a completed medical form (we can help to arrange your medical). Our team will advise on exactly what’s required at each step.
Question 5: Can you help me book my medical and theory test?

Question 6: How soon can I start my training once I’ve booked?
Once your provisional licence is back and you’ve passed your theory test, we can usually get you started very quickly — often within days, depending on availability.
